Celebrating the 30-year story of root-searching, inheriting, and soaring high

This year marks the 30th anniversary of T&T, a significant milestone for our company. As we celebrate our 30th anniversary, I want to take a moment to express my heartfelt gratitude to each and every one of you. It's your hard work, dedication, and passion that have brought us to where we are today, and I am truly honored to lead such an amazing big family.

From the first Metrotown Store founded, T&T's success has been built on the foundation of a clear vision - "Customer is #1" & "Lead in Fresh". This vision has enabled us to create a modernized supermarket for Chinese and diverse cultural families and build a "fresh world with oriental style". We should always keep our original intentions in mind as we move forward.

Under the leadership of Cindy, we have weathered many storms and grown into a successful company. Even after her retirement, we continued to deliver a beautiful report card together. We have rooted ourselves, opened new stores, and even expanded our reach into the French-speaking region of Quebec. This is a testament to our commitment to breaking out of our comfort zone and entering the homes of diverse cultures.

To celebrate our 30th birthday I gifted each of you with a copy of Cindy's book. Her journey is a legacy of T&T's roots-searching and an inheritance for us. Regardless of how generations change or how many new joiners come in, the bittersweet ups and downs in the story remind us of where our dream started and how our path was paved.

Starting this year, we will jump higher and soar higher. We will continue to serve more communities in Canada, and we will cross the border to pursue more ambitious dreams. Let us face the progress and changes of the times with the humblest heart, innovate continuously, hold on to our values, and grow upwards with a winning culture to become a truly world-class retail industry! Together, we have a bright future ahead of us, and I am excited to see where our journey takes us next.

The shopping basket incident

As the OW store's General Assistant, one of my responsibilities is to retrieve and sanitize used shopping baskets. The store's entrance and exits all have signs put up as a gentle reminder to our customers that shopping baskets are limited to in-store use only.

One evening, an unexpected incident happened at the store. While I was assisting a customer at the store's exit, I saw Cashier Yan reminding a customer not to take the shopping basket out of the store. But that customer proceeded to leave with it anyway. Just as I was waving my hand to stop the customer, our Asset Protection Officer Liu - who had already clocked out - ran after the customer, with me following behind. In the end, the customer threw the basket down and drove off. Liu took a photo of the car's license plate and said the basket was filled with unpaid items.

I was extremely moved as I retrieved the basket of goods. Thanks to our sharp-eyed Yan and the responsible Liu who came to our help even though he was off-duty, we were able to protect the company's property. They displayed dedication and integrity, and these common T&T values are what gives our employees a sense of belonging and prompts them to protect our big family. I would like to take this opportunity to express my deepest respect for Yan and Liu.

Practice punctuality and demonstrate responsibility in the workplace

Getting on and off work on time according to the shift schedule is common sense for every employee, yet it seems to never be taken seriously in practice.

There's been an increasing number of store employees recently who have not followed their work schedule, some of these incidents include: starting a shift two hours late without notifying the supervisor; working according to their own schedules - coming in late yet leaving early or starting work early and leaving early; exceeding the dedicated break time. The schedule for each position in the store is arranged based on operational needs. If any employee doesn't follow, it could impact the store's operations. This behavior inadvertently affects other colleague's workloads and customer service quality. This in turn leads to complaints from unsatisfied customers, and ultimately affects sales. As this behavior results in losses for the company, it will be taken seriously, and employees will face disciplinary action for this behavior.

Punctuality is an attitude and a responsibility at work. The company's winning culture of having a clear sense of ownership is to ensure colleagues understand and take responsibility for their own work, this includes not allowing their own behavior to affect other colleague's work. Starting work punctually to coordinate with operational needs is the cornerstone of this winning culture.
