2023 Period 10

Learning in the Face of Competition

Team,

Today I want to touch upon a topic that is fundamental to our success as we navigate the ever-changing landscape of the supermarket industry, especially in Toronto, the most competitive market in all North America.

When we first entered Toronto in 2002, the Asian supermarket scene was like the American Asian supermarket scene today: fragmented, and reminiscent of the olden Chinatown days. Since our entry, the entire market in Toronto has been uplifted. With our focus on a bright and clean environment, competitive assortment, and customer service, we pulled up the standards for all competitors. We have come a long way, shifting the paradigm from what supermarkets in Toronto were to what they are today.

Although the news now labels us as Canada’s #1 Asian Supermarket, it’s important for us to stay humble, and continue to learn from our peers. Our ability to embrace change, adapt to evolving customer preferences, and stay ahead of the competition will depend on our willingness to learn. To that end, I encourage each of you to adopt an open mindset when visiting our competitors:

1. Seek Out Learning Opportunities: when you visit a competitor, focus on discovering at least 3 things that they do well or differently. Whether it’s their store layout, merchandising, or pricing strategy, there are lessons to be learned everywhere.

2. Continuous Improvement: There are always ways we can improve, even if we look at our own day to day. Be curious, and continuously improve and refine our operations.

3. Be the Best We Can Be: Our goal isn’t just to be competitive, it’s to be the best. If we can demonstrate that we are the #1 Asian supermarket in Toronto while maintaining our commitment to learning and growth, we can win anywhere, including markets outside of Toronto, including in America.

In the end, our customers are the true winners of this journey. By learning from our competitors and being the best we can be, we can provide our customers with an unparalleled shopping experience that goes beyond their expectations.

Let’s remember that our success is built upon the values of hard work, humility, and the pursuit of knowledge. Together, we can continue to thrive in the face of competition and remain a force to be reckoned with in the supermarket industry.

The dazzling Yang Yang

Allow me to introduce you to KW store’s Meat Assistant Department Head Yang Tianyuan. Not only does he possess a strong work ethic, but he's also an exceptionally quick learner.

Yang Yang started off as an assistant in the Meat Department back in 2020. Initially, he had limited knowledge about meat, but through dedicated study and training, he swiftly earned the respect of his colleagues and the Department Head. With his composed demeanor and organizational skills, he gained valuable experience and was quickly promoted as a Meat Cutter. Later, he moved his focus toward store management, achieving yet another promotion from Supervisor to Assistant Department Head.

Due to his professionalism and extensive experience working in both sales floor and backroom, he was selected to support the new store opening in Montreal this year. Then in July, he started to support the Merchandising Department in the Store Support Centre. I'm confident that he would further enhance his product knowledge and will become an invaluable asset towards his career development.

Aside from his sense of responsibility, Yang Yang is also willing to accept feedback, works hard to train new colleagues, and never hesitates to lend support to other stores in need. This is why he has gained many unique opportunities. Yang Yang is undoubtedly the rising star of the Meat Department, and will surely shine brightly at T&T in the future!

The store's supporting hands

In the stores, what grabs people's attention typically are our colleagues and products in the sales departments - The Produce staff is arranging fresh vegetables! There is a special discount on that grocery product! The Kitchen staff is serving up delicious hot food! However, while our sales department colleagues are hard at work, there are also two non-sales departments - the Receiving Department and Cashier Department- that are working diligently to provide crucial support.

First, let's talk about the Receiving Department. Receiving colleagues are responsible for inspecting and distributing products, handling over a hundred pallets of goods per store every week. They are the first line of defense for every store. It is thanks to their professionalism inspection and organization that the store can display fresh and diverse products.

As for the Cashier's Department, Cashiers stationed at the checkout lanes to scan items, resolve issues, and sometimes face questions like, "Did you overcharge me?" or, "Why are you so slow?" Despite this, our Cashiers still maintain a smile while professionally serving our customers. It is worth mentioning that their benchmark includes cash over/shortage of less than 1%, and scanning an average of 11.1 items per minute. Based on these standards, each cashier has to scan 666 products in an hour, and 5,328 products in 8 hours, the numbers are astounding!

Therefore, besides the sales department, we should be grateful to have these professional supporting hands in our Receiving Department and Cashier Department!

Utilize benefits to protect your rights and interests

As everyone knows, from September 1, our company has significantly increased the employee shopping discount to $130 a month to help colleagues fight inflation. By now, everyone should already be enjoying this benefit.

While everyone is celebrating this fact, we would like to remind everyone that because the discount limit is suddenly significantly higher, even if you wish to share these benefits with more friends and family, please do remind them that the shopping discount must be used with the physical card. No photocopies or photos stored on the cell phone will be accepted.

Recently, a customer request for the discount with a photo of the discount card stored on their phone. This individual said they were not informed electronic copies would not be accepted. Aside from this, there have been incidents where colleagues violated the rules and used other employee's discount card barcodes to obtain shopping discounts. Those colleagues already received severe disciplinary action.

Increasing the shopping discount is the company's way of showing love and care to our employees and their family. We should protect both the company's and our own interests, and avoid any misuse. All colleagues should remind their family and friends to ensure they keep the shopping discount card safe, only the cardholder is entitled to the shopping discount. Do not take a photo of the discount card, barcode or other non physical images of the card for others to use. It is everyone's responsibility to properly utilize these benefits.
