Gisela?

2023 Period 10

Learning in the Face of Competition

Team,

Today I want to touch upon a topic that is fundamental to our success as we navigate the ever-changing landscape of the supermarket industry, especially in Toronto, the most competitive market in all North America.

When we first entered Toronto in 2002, the Asian supermarket scene was like the American Asian supermarket scene today: fragmented, and reminiscent of the olden Chinatown days. Since our entry, the entire market in Toronto has been uplifted. With our focus on a bright and clean environment, competitive assortment, and customer service, we pulled up the standards for all competitors. We have come a long way, shifting the paradigm from what supermarkets in Toronto were to what they are today.

Although the news now labels us as Canada’s #1 Asian Supermarket, it’s important for us to stay humble, and continue to learn from our peers. Our ability to embrace change, adapt to evolving customer preferences, and stay ahead of the competition will depend on our willingness to learn. To that end, I encourage each of you to adopt an open mindset when visiting our competitors:

1. Seek Out Learning Opportunities: when you visit a competitor, focus on discovering at least 3 things that they do well or differently. Whether it’s their store layout, merchandising, or pricing strategy, there are lessons to be learned everywhere.

2. Continuous Improvement: There are always ways we can improve, even if we look at our own day to day. Be curious, and continuously improve and refine our operations.

3. Be the Best We Can Be: Our goal isn’t just to be competitive, it’s to be the best. If we can demonstrate that we are the #1 Asian supermarket in Toronto while maintaining our commitment to learning and growth, we can win anywhere, including markets outside of Toronto, including in America.

In the end, our customers are the true winners of this journey. By learning from our competitors and being the best we can be, we can provide our customers with an unparalleled shopping experience that goes beyond their expectations.

Let’s remember that our success is built upon the values of hard work, humility, and the pursuit of knowledge. Together, we can continue to thrive in the face of competition and remain a force to be reckoned with in the supermarket industry.

Embracing challenges and shouldering the responsibilities

Gisela? When I first heard this name, I immediately wondered how it should be pronounced. I asked Gisela, and she politely explained it is Spanish. She is our Grocery staff at the WL store.

Gisela is petite and often has a smile on her face. She has a positive attitude and is always cheerful as if nothing could faze her. When our department was short-staffed and had an influx of new hires, I often saw her running to help others the moment she completed her own tasks. Her efficiency knows no bounds. Even amid the busiest of days, she insists, "Today's work must be completed today," a trait I find truly admirable. And when a problem arises in the department, she always manages to provide constructive feedback with an objective and impartial attitude, always focusing on resolving the issue rather than blaming others or evading responsibility.

What left the strongest impression on me was when our department required an experienced employee to lead the team, and I inquired if she was interested in taking on the role, despite its challenges. She agreed almost instantly. It is Gisela's character, her readiness to embrace challenges and shoulder responsibilities, that has filled the entire department with her positive energy. Thank you Gisela!

Only through passion can our HRA team continuously safeguard our stores

While the HRAs are colleagues dispatched by HR to work at the store, in reality, the store has a deeper understanding of them than we do. They dedicate the majority of their time to the store and effectively function as a miniature HR Department within each store. From recruitment to training to employee services; from benefits and insurance to employee meetings, all matters require their help.

CEO Tina likened our entire team to a large ship. When there is a storm, we sail through them together, holding onto our comrades ensuring no one falls into the water. Having weathered the pandemic together and overcome the difficulties, it is now time to set sail to new horizons together. In the past year, our big ship has sailed to Quebec, and to Fairview Mall. And as everyone knows, next year, we will continue to London, Ontario, and even venture into the US, where we will face even more challenges.

To allow our ship to sail further and faster, HRA has been working tirelessly to recruit more sailors, secure supply lines, help the store resolve issues. And like our colleagues at the support centre, they each are doing their very best in their respective roles to ensure their colleagues at the store can navigate smoothly in the front lines and allow our T&T's big ship to explore even more distant horizons.

Utilize benefits to protect your rights and interests

As everyone knows, from September 1, our company has significantly increased the employee shopping discount to $130 a month to help colleagues fight inflation. By now, everyone should already be enjoying this benefit.

While everyone is celebrating this fact, we would like to remind everyone that because the discount limit is suddenly significantly higher, even if you wish to share these benefits with more friends and family, please do remind them that the shopping discount must be used with the physical card. No photocopies or photos stored on the cell phone will be accepted.

Recently, a customer request for the discount with a photo of the discount card stored on their phone. This individual said they were not informed electronic copies would not be accepted. Aside from this, there have been incidents where colleagues violated the rules and used other employee's discount card barcodes to obtain shopping discounts. Those colleagues already received severe disciplinary action.

Increasing the shopping discount is the company's way of showing love and care to our employees and their family. We should protect both the company's and our own interests, and avoid any misuse. All colleagues should remind their family and friends to ensure they keep the shopping discount card safe, only the cardholder is entitled to the shopping discount. Do not take a photo of the discount card, barcode or other non physical images of the card for others to use. It is everyone's responsibility to properly utilize these benefits.
