2023 Period 1

Move Forward with 3 New Year's Resolutions

It's almost New Year's Eve, and I have already made up my 3 resolutions to get ready for a wonderful new year.

First of all, a story comes to mind: when we look for a new store, the first question we ask the landlord is: Can 4-inch large water pipes be connected here? Many departments in our store need high volume of water. The water pipe is usually 2 inches thick, we have to dig out the water pipe even we need to spend tens of thousands of dollars. Then the water can come, and the store can light up and we can do our business efficiently. If they cannot change this pipe, we cannot choose this location. It is so simple like that.

I think about that story, and made me think of my first New Year's resolution, which is to widen my water pipes from 2 inches to 4 inches. Because I know that in 2023 or even 2024, we will be very busy, and there will be many exciting new projects. We must strengthen our capabilities in order to complete them more efficiently. It is necessary to widen the water pipe to ensure that the amount of water flowing out is sufficient and continuous.

We have always believed that if we want to jump high, we have to squat down first. Therefore, in the past 3 years, in addition to facing the epidemic, we have also done a lot of fundamental works. Starting this year, I think it's time for us to jump high. Internally, find ways for us to open our capacity and our ability to do more, work smarter. Especially this year is the 30th anniversary of the founding of T&T, which is an important milestone. We should take a big step forward.

My second resolution is that everyone take care of their own health, for only with health can everything be meaningful. And my third resolution is Be Here Now, and cherish every precious moment with our children.

I hope everyone can show their best at work, and wish you great success in the Year of the Rabbit!

Seize your opportunities!

During the pandemic in 2020, I joined T&T as a Cashier at the CC store. With Department Head's approval, I had a chance to learn new skills through supporting the Fulfillment Department.

Later on, when the company opened up the Local Communication Supervisor position, the Store Manager and Supervisor encouraged me to take on the role based on my previous management experience and work performance. After I took on this role, they kept showing care and asking how I was doing, and would help me overcome any challenges I came across at work.

I worked hard and gave it my all. In December of 2021, a Store Admin vacancy opened up. The Supervisor once again asked if I would be interested in taking on this position. Though I wasn't confident, he expressed his trust in me and even patiently analyzed how that position would be helpful for my career development. I mustered up the courage to take on the role of Store Admin, continuing to learn and work hard in my new role.

I had been trained at a number of departments since I joined T&T, and looking back now, I truly felt the care Supervisors had towards the future of their subordinates. Till this day, I am extremely grateful to the Store Manager and Supervisor for giving me opportunities to grow and gain invaluable experience. I am happy to say, I am proud to be a part of T&T.

Adding meaning to the festivities

During Chinese New Year or other festivities, we always introduce our colleagues to the festive dishes and menu carefully designed by the Kitchen Department during the SC store Support Centre Huddle. This year's Christmas was no exception. You may be wondering why I was the only one attending the huddle that day. That's because our colleagues from the Kitchen Department were way busier than I was, all preparing for something extremely meaningful!

This year, we teamed up with the Taiwan Chamber of Commerce in BC (TCCBC) to give out over 800 Taiwanese-style bento boxes to caregivers in 7 Greater Vancouver hospitals. We are honoured for the opportunity to express our gratitude on behalf of the community to caregivers who provide world-class healthcare to the public. Besides the SC Kitchen Department and Central Kitchen colleagues, our CC store's Kitchen Department also helped in the preparation to ensure the bento boxes arrived hot and fresh in the hands of our caregivers. Everyone arrived early and helped with the preparation and packaging with no hesitation, so that everything could be sent out in time for lunch. We are truly grateful to our colleagues at the CC store, SC and Central Kitchen Department.

Caring for the community is one of T&T's values. Besides gathering with friends and family during the festivities, being able to contribute to our community truly adds warmth to the winter season.

Empathy, mutual assistance and cooperation strengthens harmony

Each department at the company has its own specialty with employees of various levels and seniority who each have their own indispensable responsibilities and personality. A team's success is directly related to everyone's contributions. To achieve maximum work efficiency, each person has to prioritize team harmony and mutual cooperation.

Disputes are not common in stores. A majority of them are sparked by a difference in opinions, an unwillingness to listen or work together, and further exacerbated by emotional words. Recently when a new employee raised some questions and concerns, a senior employee felt doubted. Not only did this senior employee not accept the new colleague's opinion, but responded in an unfriendly tone, thus offending the new colleague who also responded aggressively, forming a vicious cycle of negative communication.

This not only affects the relationship amongst colleagues, but also the team. There have also been management level employees ignored and even shirked responsibilities when other colleagues asked about company's policies, simply because it is not their specialty. This left our colleagues feeling helpless. These conflicts in communication sparked by a lack of empathy and mutual assistance ultimately resulted in disciplinary actions being taken.

“Help one another” is one of T&T’s winning cultures. We should think from the company and customer's perspective, and avoid any unnecessary conflict. The spirit of helping one another helps strengthen the harmony between our countless teams. Let’s put it into action to achieve a win-win situation for both yourselves and the company.
