Melinda Wang

Save our family member: Melinda Wang

“I was shocked and worried. I thought, ‘Am I going to lose my life?’ But now I’m just trying to be cured.” Melinda shared with Global News about learning of the diagnosis.

Melinda Wang is the daughter of our ED store colleague, which is also a member of the Big T&T, Big family, a part of us. Unluckily, this 17 years old girl is now suffering from Acute myeloid leukemia (AML). It is is a cancer of the myeloid line of blood cells, characterized by the rapid growth of abnormal cells that build up in the bone marrow and blood and interfere with normal blood cells.

Currently, Melinda is fighting for her survival. Due to the disease, she has a painful mouth sores which is hard for her to eat and caused a lot of weight loss. She is now waiting for an Asian decent stem cell donor to save her life. According to the data of Onematch, an organization under the Canadian Blood Service, only 16% of registered donors are Asians descents. This makes it harder for Asian cancer patients to find a match because the stem cell donor pool of Asian is extremely small. Melinda is an Asian, so her chance of finding match stem cells might be among us!

Family and friends of Melinda Wang are organizing numbers of stem cell swab drives, specifically focusing on the need for Asian donors. The stem cell donor should be of Asian descent and be between the ages of 17 and 35. We encourage you to participate the stem cell swab event. Melinda is a part of us, the ruthless disease has already taken her health and happiness. With your caring, you might be the only match who can save this young life!
